When a domain expires you cant just register it again, after it expires it goes into a 'delete' status, this is when the person can still renew it, which takes around 40 days.
Then after that it is deleted, (which takes 5 days or so).
Normally, if the domain is a good name, big companys will snap up these names the second it is droped from the registry. so you might not always get the name
