Difference is... You don't have to drink loads of alcahol so you wont always get drunk. It's much more sociable. Not everyone gets hangovers.

Whereas with drugs.. Usually you will get high or w.e you do. You can't just sit in a pub or something and take drugs.

Both alcahol and drugs are bad for you and if drugs are illegal access drinking should have the same laws as both can cause problems when taken.

You were right to not believe them, its not a hallucinogenic drug. All poppers do is cause the blood vessels to dilate (which causes a sudden drop in blood pressure), increases heart rate, and produces a sensation of heat and excitement that usually lasts for a couple of minutes.

but in all honesty, if i got offered a drug and i knew it was legit etc. i would take it.
