I know that lots of people think phpBB and InvisionFree totally rawk when it comes to free forums, but my personal favourite is Proboards.

It's really simple to set up and customise, and with the headers and footers you can do some neat things to make your board individual.

I was thinking about an example of one, although I prefer IBP anyway.

Probaords was the first forum I ever set up. It was for a radio site called www.WOOTradio.co.uk and was quite successful.

I know Mentor's bound to disagree and say they're bad because he's Mr HTML but I still like their easiness to customise colours rather than use skins.

If you paick the right colours and upload a decent graphic for the header then the forum does look quite pro. The news ticker ain't bad either.
