Well, a 4 character string is just: 1234 anything that's 4 characters in length. I'll make some auto lists, like this;

auto2.php - 2 characters in length
auto3.php - 3 characters in length
auto4.php - 4 characters in length
auto5.php - 5 characters in length
auto6.php - 6 characters in length

The on auto.php I'll have them linking, I'll do it now!

md5 is used for many many things... forum software etc. If you managed to hack a forum*, get an md5 hash and manage to find the plain text you could use it to gain access to the account. Or you can use this for other things, helping people etc.

*unsecure forum. Many forum systems, like vBulletin, now use salting, which works like this.

You're pass is password1 - it's then given a random salt, so it's @l0l1?:password - then it's encypted with md5 and stored, along with the salt.

Loads. Obviously for 1 and smaller numbers there won't be as many, but for others there will be a lot. Think of all combinations, eg:

etc...

loads!
