Hello Simmer,

Every had a controller say to you, "Report Baseleg, or Report Downwind'' ?

With this easy diagram and a little bit of my knowledge we can get you to understand with a few minutes.

"CALLSIGN, Report downwind runway XX."

If you are ever given the instruction above then you need to ''YOURCALLSIGN, Downwind runway 33'' when you are beside the runway. Imagine your aircraft is 'Downwind leg' on the poster. That is where you need to report downwind.

Its that simple, and you just repeat the steps etc for all the different legs etc.

what I got taught is that the contoller shouldn't ask you to report downwind - you need to do it. So you just call up saying "on downwind" and state your intentions, eg "G-MATT, on downwind for touch and go"

but in some circumstances, such as an overhead join, the controller WILL ask you to report downwind.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is intended for VFR zone arrivals where you will be asked to report downwind.

Ye, I was told that the pilot should say it before the controller. However, the controller should ask if the pilot hasn't done so before a point.
