"What's there?" Muldoon whispered in the candlelight
"Nothing there." replied his partner, Maroon

The darkness surrounded them, obeyed them, whenever they flickered their movement of the candle so did the darkness obey. Whenever they flashed the light around, it did obey. They both exhaled loudly and begun to ponder where to go next.

"We should go back up... there's nothing there." suggested Maroon
"What do you mean nothing's there?" asked Muldoon with his eyebrows giving off a sign of question
"Just the same old thing, darkness, and then a dead end." explained Maroon
"How do you know?" questioned Muldoon
"We've been doing this all night, we're not gonna find him." said Maroon
Muldoon questioned his thoughts, thoughts of returning to the surface and thoughts of carrying on. He looked to his partner sympathetically and thought 'He'll never know'. He handed his partner the candle and then looked deep into his partner's eyes. At the old age of 50 and with barely anything to live for, he smiled sarcastically and patted Maroon on the back.
"What are you doing Muldy?" questioned his partner
"I'm gonna find Cheddar, he's down this tunnel." he replied quickly
"How do you know?" quoted Maroon, with a grasping look in his eyes
"I know." said Muldoon, now taking the first steps out of darkness
Still illuminated by the candle light he faintly smiled to his lifelong friend and waved him goodbye with a single hand gesture, and carried on into the darkness.
