Private servers are a complete waste of time unless you just want to play around with a different spec before wasting your gold to do it on actual WoW.

Private servers are a complete waste of time unless you just want to play around with a different spec before wasting your gold to do it on actual WoW.

People play private servers for all sorts of reasons. I spent all of last summer doing GM and Admin work on a private server. It was nothing more than just answering the large flow of tickets that came through, it was quite fun once you got into the whole community of it. All the time I was doing the work I was still paying for my retail account but I was bored of it at the time. I couldn't see the attraction of playing on the servers normally because of the fact I had a retail account, although some people chose to play because it was free and much more fun to them. Although some are riddled with bugs it's not really a bad experience.

With that said though, considering Burlex has decided not to release the Ascent code to the public for the time been and just keep updating Wowscape most private servers will become out of date soon enough and that's when things might change. It depends how long and if Burlex decides to make Ascent open source once again.
