external HDD freezing.

Just tried to access my music folder on my EHDD and it keeps freezing and i;m not sure why, I can access other folders such as my pictures and movies, i can even play music via WMP but when it actually comes to entering the folder the whole thing freezes up and i've no idea why
can anyone suggesnt anything I could do to try and stop it from doing this without actually having to reformat my HDD cause i've stuff on there that I really cant afford

The chances are that one of the files in the folder is corrupt, so it crashes. Try and find out which it is and get rid of it.

I know this may sound stupid. But i know someone who had rucks of dirty images/videos in a folder on a external HDD and it froze when you put in computers that wernt that high spec. Maybe you have to mutch in that folder ?

Yeah, i've got like 10,000+ music files in there, but it's never caused me any problems before..

Are you using Vista? Sometimes I get crashes when accessing an external storage device, however it doesn't happen all the time - only on rare occasions.
