Default What am I doing wrong?

Bare in mind that as much as I love airports and flying, I'm terrible with Flight Simulator. All I want to do is fly a simple flight and land safely. None of this "your flaps are too high" or "use the VOR navigation instead"

Basically what I do is start on the runway, get permission from ATC to take off etc. Turn off the parking brake, then simply turn the throttle up to 3/4 full, and pull back on the joystick. Occassionally I will put the flaps up to 10 because I remember reading that before. Ok, so I've taken off. Now I make sure where you can switch from NAV and GPS, that it is on GPS. Fine, I put on Autopilot master switch, Autothrottle and the NAV button on. Then it seems to guide itself to the flight plan well. Now as I approach my destination I announce my landing intentions to the ATC and then put the frequency of the runway in NAV1 and NAV2 and press the ID button. Now at this point I've tried staying on GPS, and it just turns randomly but keeps going and missing where I want to be. So I try switching to NAV, I thought that would make sense considering I have just put the runway in NAV1 and NAV2. Now ATC ask me if I'm cleared to land, great I'm getting close. But then it never actually lines up with the run way and either goes round in circles or onwards.

Bare in mind I've probably done about 1000 things wrong, but this is good progress for me! I only want to know how to get it me to line up with the runway instead of going round in circles.

After you put the ILS frequency into NAV1 and NAV2 are you in the glideslope/localizer range? The glideslope guides you down, and the localizer guides you towards the centerline - you should be within the range for it to work. Only press ID (I think you said ID, otherwise its VOR LOC and then APP) to establish on them

To save Matt from it, there is a tutorial stickied in this forum about the ILS (VOR/APP)

Imagine an invisible line that runs on the runway heading, for both runways. The line in which you have to line up to to land. You should be pretty close to this line to have any chance of your autopilot recognising the frequencys you've entered. Once it has recognised it, if you've set the autopilot on the right settings, your plane should turn and line its upself on this 'line' and guide your plane down. You can check on your GPS to see if you're pretty close to this line.
