Hey,
One additional tip: Always use xhtml 1.1 Strict. It may seem like alot more work at first, but trust me when i say it will save your hours in making your site cross browser compatible.
ie7, firefox, opera and safari will normally display the page exactly the same as each other. Ie6 is still a pain, but still does a better job than normal.
