I think abbreviations and acronyms always have and always will be part of games titles. I know Grand Theft Auto has been called GTA for as long as I can remember and there are loads of games that have had the ends cut off them (Gears being a recent example, Heroes for the HOMM series, I'm sure there are loads more but I'm half asleep), especially with subtitles (Worms 4: Mayhem is just called Worms 4 for example). I think it's fairly accurate to say it only happens to games with 4 syllables or more, if people do it with games with less it just sounds silly. But yeah it doesn't really annoy me.
