Just to add on to :James's post:

You should in no way be surprised that you had reputation removed even if you didn't see the announcement. All forum members are expected to know and abide by the rules.

C13. Do not ask for reputations points directly or indirectly.

So, I would consider yourself lucky that you only got repuation removed without any other consequences.
