Well in Cod4 i would say the Barret .50 cal, most of the time its a 1 hit kill in normal mode. But only playing hardcore myself you can't go wrong with any sniper if you know how to aim and shoot.
Its a shame they didn't include the L96 in the game though that is a brilliant rifle.

Granted its powerful, but if you miss your chance I just feel the recoil would **** it up for you!

Thats the M40, they're similar.
