Internet Explorer 6 and I'm sure below are the only versions of Internet Explorer that has a problem with PNG, but even then it's more to do with the case of transparency / alpha transparency but this was later fixed in Internet Explorer 7. My guess is some setting is turnt off or something is broken / missing. Like everyone else suggested use Firefox or Google Chrome, I prefer Firefox.

If you're on Vista is User Account Control enabled? If there's a PNG image on your computer, can you open and view it correctly? Are you using some third party download manager?

Try installing something like adobe fireworks/photoshop and setting it as the default file viewer for .png files. It may just reset the way PNG files are viewed and so fix the issue, even though it is browsing the internet rather than opening the file on your computer.

Also, when you install chrome/firefox, are you importing settings from another browser?
    Kind Regards,

    Guy

One other thing that it might be is a problem with your router. I have seen in the past strange issues like this being caused by the router's firewall/computer's firewall blocking the file type - even with images.
