Yeah the second generation was the predessor to the 3G network and it's still around the whole UK providing coverage in some none-3G areas and for none 3G capable mobiles. It's a fair bit slower for internet browsing and there's a lack of video calling but it's very much around.
2G is known as GSM, then there was roughly 2.5G GPRS, and then 2.75G which was the EDGE (very small network and not used much).
3G is UMTS and then there's the successor to 3G which is 3.5G aka HSDPA
