    Default Speeding up my laptop...

    Right...

When i insert my 4gb micro sd card, i get an option "help speed up my computer using this device", and i was just wondering what this would acctually do to speed it up.

Secondly, would it be worth buying a 500gb external if it would do the same job?

    Thanks, ash.

No. Tests show it hiders performance except in very particular circumstances. If your computer is half decent, don't do it.
