They have removed unused accounts for a long time at select periods, but by what criteria they do it from and the exact details where not known.

Actually there was some proof that it's going to happen bewteen Dec 24 - Jan 8 of '09-'10.

many sites allow name changes at a price, I wouldnt mind paying 50 creds for a name change haha

it happened in 05.
if the account you want has last logged in before 2005 (christmas day i think it was) then I doubt it will be deleted next time either so you probably won't get it.
i don't see how this is news though.
