iPhone Contract Questions

Hey.

My friend's got an iPhone 3G and wants to upgrade it to the 3Gs.
He's currently on PAYG and is planning to jump to contract so he doesn't need to spend nearly £600 at the start of summer and be skint during it.

Buttttt he wants to know: if he takes out the two year contract do they offer him an upgrade if a new one is released next June? Like will he be given the chance to buy a new one and extend his contract with o2?
