    You can try Bromelain:
Take 250-500 mg. of Bromelian between each meal throughout the day until your bruise heals. Bromelian supplements work by helping to digest the proteins that causes pain and swelling. This will help keep the bruise from swelling more and from becoming more painful.

Was about to post this. Take it easy with the Bromelain however, it may make you feel very light headed, which isn't good with a head injury.

ibuprofen is my suggestion. Its pretty effective at reducing swelling (what its primary purpose actually is, although now days its know more for its painkilling properties)

Also, hitting someone with a cricket bat? thats just not cricket! *unable to resist*

    Ibuprofen as suggested already.

Surely, the hospital told you what to do or what not to do? :S

Ice on the bruise, but it's not permanent anyway. I'd show it off while you got it I would. They only last like 2 weeks do black eyes anyway, or what you've got.

when i got assaulted i had a huge inflamed black eye, dunno if its just a local remedy but if you put butter/magerine on it it helps it go down, i also used a cloth with ice in it directly after it happen.

i still had it for about 2 weeks like.
