Firstly, although I have always noticed the similarities that Opera's logo shares with Google's, they are completely different things. (Also, Opera's new logo looks slightly different and to me, more unlike the Google 'O').
Google's doodle is usually customised to celebrate significant events, as we all know. The only three significant things that come to mind are; the 11th anniversary of the founding of Google Corporation which I believe was the 4th of September, the 40th anniversary of man's first steps onto the moon, but this was way back in July and probably most significantly, some day around now (can't find any actual date ANYWHERE) was apparently also the 40th anniversary of the first supposed UFO sighting. Also on the 4th of this month, a film, District 9, was released. It's a mockumentary about an alien invasion of Earth, (looks pretty good, produced by Peter Jackson).
On the other hand, apparently the search term "unexplained phenomena" is what the doodle linked to which has had a recent increase in searches (before the doodle was displayed).
My guess is that it's a nice big ironic pie - the doodle itself is an unexplained phenomena! The guys at Google probably had lots of fun knowing it would trigger all sorts of hype and conspiracy theories with millions of people all over the world - which it most certainly did. Man, must be cool to have that kind of power.
