Default You know those specific forum bans...

...it'd be nice to see them be used in the sports forum rather than just the spam forum. Everytime there's a big match on you get the same people attacking one another and gradually it builds up more and more until it's a full blown row. Those that keep breaking the rules could get sport-banned over a weekend, say?

    Good idea? Bad idea?

They are in effect but i agree could be used more however the decision to do so lies with the forum manager. You won't always be aware if a user is under a FSB unless they should say so.

Two bans for the sports forum have been issued in the past 60 minutes.

I know of two other bans handed out for the sports forum in the past.

As the bans don't do anything to the account apart from restrict access to the forums and PM the user - other users cannot tell that they're banned.

The arguements in the Manchester Derby thread were stopped because of these bans

I think this has 90% chance of coming out really blunt and wrong. However, I feel that if the forums were moderated appropriately then there wouldn't be an issue. For example, I will take tonight - there was one problematic thread, not numerous that can't be dealt with but one. Now, the said thread was closed and then for some reason why is beyond common sense was re-opened.

The members who were banned, I can guess who are sometimes actually quite constructive and just because they misbehave in one or two threads that doesn't mean they misbehave altogether. I know you're the one with the facts and statistics but I've seen them be constructive in the forum.

I just feel if the moderation was applied appropriately then there wouldn't have been an issue and you wouldn't have to enforce forum specific bans. Just my two cents.

The reason the thread was reopened was because there were a large amount of users discussing the match/football in general politely - it was just two specific users arguing.

After issuing several warnings/infractions it was clear that these users were not going to stop, at the end of the day we didn't want to ruin things for the rest of the sports forum users (the thread has turned out quite well now for instance apart from one or two hiccups).

The bans were issued for a logical reason and they have served their purpose - they are only very short bans anyway.

I think preventing specific members from posting for a short amount of time is probably a better way of moderating than closing threads. Naturally if it was only two members actually using the thread - it'd be closed but as there were five or six other members in discussion about the match it's clearly better that it's been left open, it's been open since they were banned and I haven't had to touch it once? I don't know about other s'mods though.

As Robbie said, it was a constructive discussion that was derailed by a vocal minority.

This minority also refused to stop after numerous warnings. Thus, they were removed from the forum, and the best part was that the thread was allowed to continue.

I think that is the merit of FSBs, we don't end up losing valuable discussions due to a few people derailing them, they can be brought back on track. The FSB allows a forced cool-down time and by the time users can see the thread again the topic will have moved on (and if they choose to try it again then they'll face the consequences).

In my opinion there are very definite merits to the system over normal moderation.

Double thumbs up to the mod team

i was banned from the sports forum last month for a day, and so was 'ksoz'.

just wondering, isn't there an option where mods could ban users from THREADS, instead of forums? and then if the user who keeps abusing the section, then they get banned from the section for X amount of days? and then continue on to a temp ban, perm ban, ip ban and whatnot? just a suggestion, i think that would make a difference...
