well considering ben gibbard is also in death cab for cutie, and the fact the postal service has licensed their songs to a million and a half advertizers and thus made millions. and at almost a million copies of their only album sold, i'd hardly call them unsuccessful, or uncommercialized. id rather be a good musician and successful, which is the postal service. if the postal service were to tour again, i guarantee you they would sell out tickets in every venue faster than owl city ever will.

ok, what if i used the term "main stream"?

    their highest single at 87?
    owl city = 1.

haven't even had a top 200 for 5 years, on a break, yes? a 5 year break. mint. i know where you're coming from and i'm all for small bands like postal service (small in comparison, btw) but owl city, due to the huge success of 'fireflies' will be more popular than postal service. tenfold.

    just balancing the argument here.

well mainstream is a subjective term, vampire weekend had the #1 album in the u.s. a week ago but ill be damned if they're played on the radio. what would qualify as mainstream to you? being played on mtv? a bunch of 13 year old girls butchering the hell out of one of their singles? being on a major label?

they've had one album, thus the fact they havent charted in some times. if the postal service were to release a follow-up, i guarantee it would go #1 and end up selling more copies than owl city, and it would probably have a pretty well-received single. btw owl city still has to catch up to the postal service albums' sales, even though the postal service, as you mentioned, have only had a song that peaked at 87. i highly doubt owl city will retain popularity, unlike the postal service whose popularity has only grown significantly over the years.

I would class mainstream as like every second music listener has heard of them. Something like that. I know it's subjective which is what makes something like this open to debate but Owl City's debut single made number 1 pretty much everywhere, is played over and over on radios and music TV - I'd say that's pretty mainstream.

so by that definition, anyone in the united states who has turned on the television in the past 5-6 years has heard countless clips of the postal service, which im sure makes them 10x more listened to than owl city.

but again, i really dont care if youd classify the postal service as mainstream. id way way rather be in a band that puts makes music that stands the test of time incredibly but isnt on mtv than a band that has a number one single then is forgot about in a year.

I really don't get Owl City. Just sounds like some backing track from a late 90's boyband with a slightly girly sounding manboy type thing who's smoked too many cigarettes. I think I must be missing something.
