
advanced ticket are for set trains so you must of been very lucky.To show what time an advanced ticket is for, you need the seat reservation for the particular train, if you don't have one for the second leg of the journey, you can get any train, I used to travel from Newark North Gate to Reading via Kings X then the underground to Paddington (or Waterloo), and it would give me a ridiculous amount of time in London for change-over until my next scheduled train, I rarely recieved a seating reservation for my London > Reading train, and I got on any train and the ticket was valid. I did this many times.

lucky each journey, twice a month for two years? you can only tell what train the ticket is for by looking at the reservation, if you arent given a reservation for a particular leg of the journey you can catch any train, you just have to ensure on the first leg you are on the set train which is on your reservation.
