It is much easier saying 'sovereign state' because thats a real country by the definition. The United Kingdom is a sovereign state, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are not. The Netherlands is a sovereign state, Holland etc are not.

Officially it's name isn't Holland, and a lot of people within the Netherlands complain about this. Holland is the name for the Western Region of the Netherlands, like Kent is the South Eastern part of the UK (or England). England is a country and was only united with Scotland, as Scotland was formerly not a country, and Scotland and Ireland and Wales all have their own laws and their own country, however through the Union they share many laws and help each other out.
