Recently over summer I've been going long distance cycling with a few friends. I have a standard BMX/Cycling hybrid bike with 3 sets of gears going 1-6 through each with the 3rd tier, 6 being the highest. Yesterday we cycled 30 miles and I was always falling behind, my muscles seemed to ache after I tried to pick up speed and going uphill absolutely killed me. Does anyone have any tips on long distance cycling and how to maintain a speed.

Take it easy, and its probably just because they're much fitter than you. You sure they aint done more leg excercise overall than you have? coz that would be the obvious explanation

Cycling takes some time to cope and get used to.

When I cycled I didn't really cycle long distances - only to the shop or downtown.

Average all the way through is better than fast at the start/slow at the end.

I did Doncaster to Rotherham and back about 2 months ago, 9 hours constantly cycling off road, you gotta ignore the pain.

Uphills are easier if you start on a higher gear and gradually go on to lower ones as it gets steeper.
