Yes, it's illegal. You face a penalty ticket dependent on who pulls you. Unless he uses an excuse of it having dropped of he would get a vehicle defect notice to have one fitted asap.

Ahh! It's not that I thought it wasn't much of a problem, I was just under the impression from someone saying before (can't remember who, t'was a long time ago ) that it's something you can get pulled quite a few times for untill they take proper action. Thanks Yoshi!

it's non endorsable and at worst carries a £60 fine, usually just get a vdrs with a 14 day notice to change it or get let off if I fit it at the roadside. It's in the boot with some cable ties if it comes to it.
