place it in appData/.minecraft/bin

start minecraft like you usually would. It's all good.

Been playing for about five minutes, getting some lag spikes but the terrain is REALLY different.

Yeah I keep getting lag quite badly when it generates a new chunk. Biome code needs some work I reckon, just flew for about 5 mins in one direction on creative mode and didnt come across any land.. It's really nice though, found some amazing rivers and ravines already

They're not bothered by it really, they just didn't want to release it or label it "complete" or "ready" because otherwise people would complain that a beta release of a beta game is broken. Thank god we're getting nightlys from now on.
