Would your family be annoyed if you were a Protestant going out with a catholic? My sister is going out with a boy called eamon (catholic name) and my granda has a real problem with it.

Maybe it's not a big deal in England? I don't think it's a big deal, it's just if they got married or had children then it would be a problem I guess

There's not really that many strict religious people that I know of round these parts, especially so much so that they'd restrict their child going out with someone. Then again, saying that I somehow managed to find one since my ex's parents didnt even know about us until a week before we broke up, and it was just her dad, dont know if her mum ever found out ha, but i digress..

But yeah I dont think my mum would care what religion the person I went out with was, I dont have a religious family (i think believing in god is as close to religion as it gets, but nothing strict).

I guess it's a much bigger problem where you are though.

well i live in dublin and i don't know a single religious person
i went to a school that was 'multidenominational' which means it doesn't believe in religion but we still had catholics
nobody here cares about religion, also i know so many 'catholics' that use birth control... they really don't care

so no my family wouldn't care, i'd never date someone really into their religion anyway, i just don't understand it

My parents are far from religious. In fact they were like 'what you want to study religion for' (I do it at uni) so they wouldn't have a problem. It's a shame your granddad has a problem with it but he lived through a different time of conflict so perhaps not too surprising.

considering this generation tends not to give a **** about religion, i don't think this is going to be a problem in the future. my grandad is catholic and completely old-fashioned and niave, he wants me to have a catholic boyfriend and the whole NO SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE. it'll be a long time before i get married though and i'm pretty sure he'll be gone by then...

my ex was buddhist and his mum used that as an excuse to not like me but i know it's because i'm white. my ex before that was catholic which his mum LOVED then decided i was a promiscuous devil child. religion can be pretty crazy.

Think its a Northern Ireland thing really. It's not really a religious thing as such because people identify themselves as protestant or catholic but don't even believe in God. My dad is a catholic but I was brought up a protestant and my family are all like big rangers supporters/in bands etc and they all accept my dad. My dad's family didn't want my dad marrying my mum though. If I was to marry a catholic, my kids would have to be brought up protestant. It isn't something I would compromise on.
