yeah, i remember being in first year and calling childline and making up things that were happening to you was a very common thing to happen. i remember a lot of our class would generally join in, but i can honestly say i didn't. i have done things when i was little like ringing up the emergency services just to hear the person ask if i had an emergency or whatever they'd ask, but i'd quickly hang up. i think i was told things like they'd arrest you if you rang them up, even without speaking. of course those children were REALLY stupid to have done that and should be punished, but at the end of the day i think they were just being curious as to what would happen.

I think those girls should have received harsher punishment. It's not like they just phoned and made a joke, then hung up. They were talking for an entire 33 minutes, fabricating a serious story about a girl and her unconscious mother, which ended up sparking a a news conference and pleas for help in a search by the Ambulance Service.

@ To people in the UK, how do you get away with calling 911/999 and hanging up? Here in Canada, and I assume in the United States too, if you call 911 and hang up without even saying anything a police car responds anyway, and you get in some serious trouble, can even be charged.

I thought, even if you do ring 999 here and hang up, that they still come to you anyway just in case there is a genuine emergency? I'm not sure if they'd only track down the location of the phone number after you'd chosen police/fire/ambulance or what. 'Cause I'm 90% they don't just leave it be.

You don't get charged for the first time I believe, you just got a "telling off". If you did it repeatedly I'd imagine you'd get fined or something for wasting police/fire/medical 'time'.

This hoax call went way too far. I’ve no idea how you punish children of this age, but in my opinion a warning isn’t enough and neither is taking away privileges. The services we have, work very hard and we constantly hear of cuts taking place.

I am very curious as to what the girl’s parents; the police and partner agencies consider being appropriate action?

I would suggest a custodial sentance that was suspended so as not to begin until they turn 18.
