Gay marriage to be introduced in Scotland

Scotland could become the first part of the UK to introduce gay marriage after the SNP government announced plans to make the change.

Ministers confirmed they would bring forward a bill on the issue, indicating the earliest ceremonies could take place by the start of 2015.

Political leaders, equality organisations and some faith groups welcomed the move.

But it was strongly opposed by the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland.

The announcement was made in the wake of a government consultation which produced a record 77,508 responses.

Same-sex couples in Scotland currently have the option to enter into civil partnerships and the Holyrood government has insisted no part of the religious community would be forced to hold same-sex weddings in churches.

Nope, we're allowed "civil partnerships" which have all the same benefits and legal ramifications as a marriage just with a different name, except if you enter into a civil partnership with someone who has a title (like Lord or Duke or w/e) you don't get the courtesy title that a heterosexual spouse would, dunno why but I don't think many people care too much about that...

First one done under the Civil Partnership Act was in Worthing :dance:

About time the UK started adapting. It looks like the right course of action is being taken too, that it won't be forced upon churches to hold the ceremonies (and rightly so).

To be honest I just see this as a way of buttering up the gay community so they vote yes to independence. All in all, good for them.

I'm against having the definition of gay 'marriage' being forced on me by the state, and i'm also against Scotland being able to make its own laws like this whilst its part of the United Kingdom - either they're independent or not, time to decide. Ideally i'd have one parliament (Westminster) remove the state from marriage altogether and people/institutions can call it what they want even though I disagree with it entirely.

That won't last (because we no longer believe in property rights and individual liberty) and you should also remember that people who work in registery offices who disagree with this will now face losing their jobs.
