I'd love to try the new earphones, but they really look uncomfortable...
My contract runs out just before xmas and the likelihood of me getting the new iPhone is high. However nothing has really given me the 'wow' factor from this.

I completely agree with you. I however always end up buying a phone full price before my contract ends. LOL

If you bought an iPhone unlocked from the apple store, what would you do to get it on a network because your not buying it from a network such as orange?

Can you buy iPhones from the Apple Store already on networks with plans, such as from orange on pay as you go in the apple store?

You would get nano sim card for whatever network you are wanting to use and insert it. In regards of your second question they had options for the previous iPhones on what plans and networks you want to be on. But you can buy an unlocked iPhone 5 for £529.

still debating either to get the phone on contract or pay as you go.

I *really* like the new iPod Nano designs, but honestly... what were they thinking with the weird back on the iPhone 5?
