You'd probably be better to ask him calmly and not really make a big thing out of it, to be honest. The last thing you'd want is him getting angry at you ('cause that would never get you your money back!)
Good luck anyway, sounds like a bit of a lost cause to me though!
It seems they aren't being a good friend, assuming they're trying to get out of it. Play it up a bit, make it sound like you're more desperate for the cash than you really are.
