    Default Stress Problems?

    Hey

    Lately I have been having a lot of stress problems and it is getting to a point were I can't stand it at all. It mainly all started last year with one of my family members passing away. I grieve really bad and with school it was really getting me all stressed and worked up that my grades were falling.

    But I have got that part sorted and I thought I got this stress problem sorted but it has started to come back. I think the main reason for it is that I have prelims (mock exams) coming in up in 3 weeks and I am starting to get really worked up about it. My grades are credit levels and my teachers have set me a high standard and so have I and because I have got so high the pressure is building up on me. I will admit I do study loads about 2 hours on weekdays and almost 5 hours on weekends which is quite crazy when you look at it like that.

    But during my classes at school I am getting stressed and worked up about it, got bad headaches and its just getting to me so badly. The past 2 days I have only had 2 hours sleep and you may think this is quite weird for this to all happen for mock exams. Our teachers are quite strict and especially for people like me with high standards that if we miss our actual exams then they use these results or if we fail these mock exams then we go down a level which I really don't want to happen. We also have these mock exams for us to get used to the actual exams next year but I am really nervous for it.

    So I was wondering is there anything I can do to help my stress levels go down and a way for me to stay calm about it all? I know that maybe taking a walk could help but I thought I could ask for some advice as many of you guys have done your exams and you know what the pressure is like.

    Ive always suffered with stress problems like you, and these were brought on by traumatic events in life.

    My psychiatrist tells me that the best way to relax is to do something you enjoy for 30 mins. a day. She recommended listening to music (anything but rap) and trying not to think about anything else. Breathing techniques can also help, one she talked about is where you imagine there is a sail boat in front of you and that you are pushing it out when you breathe out, and bringing it in when you breathe in, the idea being you push it out further each time.

    If this doesn't work I'd recommend a trip to your GP as the NHS has different services that could help.

    Ok here's a list of things that I think should help:

    • Do things like go to bed half an hour to an hour earlier than you normally do (especially on weekdays).
    • Choose a sport that you really enjoy (can be anything from football to yoga) and make sure you're doing it at least once a week for long enough to get you out of breath.
    • When you feel things piling up and you're at home, take a walk.
    • Make sure you get at least half an hour of fresh air every single day.
    • Have bubble baths.


    If stress levels continue to rise and you get worried about them I suggest seeing a doctor!

    The way I see it is you only get stressed if you put pressure on yourself. People can put pressure on you yeah but it only works if you then add extra pressure on yourself to live up to their expectations. You have high expectations for yourself but the irony is you'll just end up trapped in a cycle of stress (you put stress on yourself to get good grades, you get so stressed out that you actually fluff an exam, you then put more pressure on yourself and so the cycle continues). The thing to remember is that these things are a marathon not a sprint. Never expect perfection but take things one step at a time to work towards it always knowing that you never will achieve true perfection but it gives you something to live for to try all the same. Once you believe this things won't seem too bad. Read quote in my signature

    That's the more attitude help. More practical help would be to break your revision down into smaller chunks with breaks in between each one and do it one chunk at a time rather than trying to zoom through everything in one big chunk. If you break things down into smaller pieces, things don't feel so overwhelming.

    I know how worried you were about everything, but after reading the advice given here--you should be ok! Just keep calm! You've done so much studying already! If anyone should be worried its me. Your going to do brilliant, just make sure your nerves dont get the best of you, now that its getting closer to the time, trying cutting down your hours of revision, like I said, you've already done so much, now you just need to concentrate on yourself and staying calm!

    You've got to set your priorities straight. Focus on the most important things and don't focus on them 24/7. Go out for a walk, even have a rest for a day etc. Maybe drop some activities or hobbies that you do in order to not have so many things being hit at you. It's all about prioritizing and finding the right balance.

    Elfie actually mentioned some nice advice that I echoed. A sport or something would be good, as long as you're not spending all the time indoors behind books and computers!

    Thanks guys for the advice as it has really helped me this past week. I have tried going out for walks and it actually is a nice feel and I can just stay calm and just enjoy it. Also considering I live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by.. mountains it works haha
    The part with the breathing has helped me so much I actually was quite surprised that it works. See the problem with me is that i am focused on studying because you know that's how you pass the exams in the first place but just realising doing parts of work every so often works so well. Lets me take more stuff in so thank you guys has really helped. I've started to talk to my support teacher more about it and hopefully will get some help throughout the next year to keep making sure I am staying calm. But he said once the mock exams are done I will realise how much pressure will be on me and what it feels like when I come to the actual exams next May
