This is the reason that awareness days are needed - not to say "some people self harm BET YOU NEVER KNEW" but so that idiots who are completely and wilfully ignorant of the situation might manage to be educated on the subject. I know that being stupid is easy but whenever I come across something I don't understand I try to learn about it, especially if it's a world issue that affects peoples' lives. Tom you mentioned the severely disabled as one of your exceptions, but completely failed to acknowledge the destructive nature of depression and just how severely disabling it can be in its many forms. Just because you can't see it on the surface doesn't mean it's unimportant or not serious.

So someone hurting themself somehow makes this better... Unless you were referring to suicide, then it would depend what the conditions were.

as for it being an awareness day well if it helps change even ONE persons mind then i am happy with that. unfortunately we are stuck with brainless *****. and you wonder why we don't want to live in a world like this.
Me not agreeing with your opinion does not make me brainless.

Having no sympathy for people who suffer from chronic mental illnesses isn't having an opinion it's just being uncaring

I don't think people are idiots to self harm. I would hope however that they can get out of that cycle as quickly as possible because ultimately self-harm is not going to make the problem go away. Releasing all that pent up frustration, stress, anger etc via self-harm is a quick-fix and I hope that they find the light at the end of the tunnel and provide a safe environment for them to work through those problems. Even if the problem doesn't go away or can't go away, it's more about looking at it from a different angle so that it's easier to cope with.

I have personally never self-harmed but my friends have. So, I personally do not understand it. But, that is really nice of you to put this up, hopefully it really helps others!

I'm not perfect but I'll keep trying.

To say all who self harm have a chronic mental illness is a bit of an overstatement and never did I say I had no sympathy for all who self harm. In regards to the opinion, it was nothing to do with if I sympathised or not and was aimed at the point of awareness days.

It's quite clear that people who are addicted to self harm do have chronic mental illnesses, even if they're "just doing it for attention" as people love to suggest on these topics. Many all-out suicide attempts are desperate pleas for attention deep down (hence the huge survival rate) but that doesn't make them any less tragic or worthy of support and medical help. If your first post was supposed to be you expressing your opinion that awareness days are pointless then the fact that your actual words were:

translates to "awareness days are pointless because I have my ideas and am unwilling/unable to change them" which is bigotry, not reason.

Some people's attitudes are different because some people have a different opinion to yours. One reason why this country is so fantastic is that other people are allowed to express an opinion, whatever it may be.

Yeah, but some opinions on this are just disgusting... it is just awful to even think/say what their opinions are on this topic
