Im struggling to get online to the cloud servers it seems

Same here, had this problem last night.

Are you turning your xbox off when there is a ring circling (bottom right) cos i done that and i lost 30% of my ******* story. Surely the characters should save online

I've never turned my Xbox off when I see those symbols. Although on single player I've started to quick save every so often due to what happened to me on first day.

Well I have to admit i'm loving online, all this time we can actually play with our friends and how often the rockstar cloud is up - it's really quite impressive. I'm so glad that they sorted everything out prior to release and had plenty of space ready.

If you go

Story Mode > Start > Online > Join GTA > Solo

does your char load then?

If I joined Online by the 4th character or someone inviting me into the game then it doesn't load my character, but if I go into the solo lobby it loads my character then I can go on other games
