Can't because not eligible
I'd love to and I keep saying I'm going to but it's possible I'm not eligible.
No, I really want to but I'm not eligible and unfortunately never will be
I'm borderline eligible, my weight fluctuates quite a lot so it would depend on a day to day basis. Most times I've intended to before I have been ineligible or so close to the border they turned me away (I have a common blood type anyway).
For those wondering, eligibility is based o the following:
- As long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
- However, If you are female, aged under 20 years old and weigh under 65kg (10st 3lb) and are under 168cm (5' 6") in height, we need to estimate your blood volume before donating. (this is why I was borderline and ended up being turned away before)
- Male donors can give blood every 12 weeks. That's approximately every 3 months or 4 times in a 12 month period. Female donors can give every 16 weeks or approximately every 4 months.
- If you've travelled outside of the UK (I'm not sure whether it's listed countries or any at all though)
- If you have heart conditions
- If you've had a infection within the last 2 weeks or taken antibiotics in the last week
- Generally feeling ill- even a cold
- If you're on a hospital waiting list (the last reason I was turned away)
- If you've been to the dentist in the last week
- If you've had a piercing or tattoo in the last 4 months
- You're male and it hasn't been 12 weeks since last donation
- You're female and the same, but 16 weeks
- You've had hepatitis or jaundice within a year
- You've had acupuncture in the last months
- There's a certain horrible disease which means you can't donate if any of your blood relatives have
- You've ever had human pituitary extract used in hormone or fertility treatments before '85
- If you've received blood in the course of medical treatment since 1980
- If you're a male who's had oral or anal sex with a male in the last 12 months
- If you're a female who's had sex with a male who's had sex with a male
- If you're a commercial sex worker
- If you've ever injected yourself with drugs
- If you've got haemophilia or related bloodclotting disorders
- If you've been sexually active in parts of the world where HIV / AIDS are common, you can check for them
I STARTED THIS LIST OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD THEN ENDED UP GOING ONTO THE WEBSITE TO CLARIFY STUFF omg
Yes once I have, that reminds me I still need to book when I'm going in next, keep forgetting!
When I had my first ever blood test (couple months ago) I cried like a baby even before I did it. They also couldn't find my vein so that was traumatizing. I then turned really pale,,,, so i decided from now on not to go through that again. ~answer no not eligible. ~
Sucks doesn't it? They tried hypnotism with me but it didn't work because I was thinking against it.. And was worried they would stab it into my arm when I wasn't expecting it..When I had my first ever blood test (couple months ago) I cried like a baby even before I did it.
