Jeremy Paxman to quit BBC Two's Newsnight

Paxman's first job at the BBC was in radio but it is as a Newsnight presenter that he will be remembered

The BBC said he made his decision last summer but "generously agreed" to stay until June to help the show through "a difficult period". That came after it chose not to run an item linking Jimmy Savile with child abuse.

Paxman said it was "time to move on" and he "should rather like to go to bed at much the same time as most people".

Director General Tony Hall said Paxman, 63, was "a rare and dazzling talent".
Apparently he's wanted to quit since the BBC via NewsNight tried to cover up the Jimmy Savile scandal.

It's a big loss. I used to watch NewsNight going to bed every night before school, and he's one of the best political interviewers. I don't know if any of you have seen it, but this will always be Paxman's best moment destroying the now-Lord Howard:

I do hope he starts doing some Michael Portillo-like documentaries. I watched an interesting lecture the other day by Paxman (former republican turned monarchist) at a university on the institution of constitutional monarchy. He's rather good.

How long NewsNight will survive without him is another question.

    Thoughts?

My personal favourite Paxman interview is definitely this one:

I'm going to miss him! Didn't realise his age though, hasn't lost it yet. One of very few people who can put politicians in their places.

It will be a shame, and frankly, I can't see newsnight being around in the next couple of years.

None of that makes sense. He won an election and he's to blame for winning it? It's like the duties of voting were forgotten about because Paxman and the other man simply do not like him, yet clearly hundreds of voters do for merely electing him. It seemed really pointless. Clearly she wasn't good if the voters said no.
