UKIP are slowly kicking out the naysayers, intentionally or not. I don't believe UKIP currently has an official stance on climate change, their stance is however that renewable energy is not viable - instead they want us to transition to Nuclear power as it has a greater potential to be a clean energy source. I think I read somewhere that nuclear power has lower CO2 per watt than wind turbines.

Turbines are not the only ones. The way in which solar panels are manufactured produces a lot of CO2 and waste. If I recall correctly the Tories are slowly backing down on solar farms, and instead would rather people have them attached to the roof of their homes. They are a blight on the environment, and take up far too much space. Also, turbines arguably effect wildlife, and they do not last as long as hoped and require continual maintenance.

Solar Panels don't really make much sense in the UK anyway. Actually they don't make much sense at all. They generate a surplus of power during the day when you don't need it and then produce none at night when you do need it.

I thought they could store energy for periods when there wasn't any light.

Batteries are expensive, have too low a capacity, bad chemicals etc. Hydroelectric dams are the best way on a national scale, use pumps to fill dams then they can burst power when it's really needed. But it has something like a 30% efficiency level.

The one near me is useless - they're turned off for most of the day in the summer because they produce too much energy. The main reason is that there is no place to store the energy - they go straight into the grid rather than be stored, as there's no battery strong enough to house all the potential energy.

As Chippiewill sort of suggests - power is needed in the evening for cooking, lights, charging phones for the next day, television etc. As the panels and their power are not used in the evening, they become useless.
