must admit tough, had to decline an invite to fly over to ireland in september..
17 sounds like so many, whaaaat. that's ridiculous.

it does but compared to how much flights there are a DAY, never mind a year, that is a very small number. we just never heard of them unless there are crazy circumstances surrounding them, just as we don't hear about every school shooting, train derailment, multiple car crashes etc in the world

17 for the whole world. Compare that to the amount of deaths that caused by cars or other modes of transport on the ground and you will see big difference.

what, in 2013 there was 138 plane crashes, 2012 was 155 (all aviation, including private not just commercial)

1972 is the worst year as 3,329 people died in plane crashes, 2,266 died in 1943.

but yeah 17 idk where that comes from, even for commercial flights seems a bit high (17 flights carrying 200 people would be 3,400 fatalities) most crashes will be private flights and small planes (infact thinking about it obviously not every crash will be similar to current ones with total fatalities, and just dodgy landings etc so most people surviving so ok)

2012 in the UK 2175 people died which was traffic related

i said 17 FATAL plane crashes, the other crashes would not be fatal and may not even include deaths. not all flights carry over 200 people and 2012 had the lowest amount of fatal crashes (23) and overall there were 475 who died according to http://news.aviation-safety.net/2013...-for-aviation/

"The Aviation Safety Network today released the 2012 airliner accident statistics showing a total of 475 airliner accident fatalities, as a result of 23 fatal airliner accidents.

The year 2012 was an extremely safe year for civil aviation, Aviation Safety Network data show. The Aviation Safety Network recorded a total of 23 fatal airliner accidents, resulting in 475 fatalities and 36 ground fatalities. Both figures are extremely lower than the ten-year average of 34 accidents and 773 fatalities."

this is year there are 12 FATAL crashes, the MH flights had 250+ passengers each therefore already a higher number of people who died compared to 2012 who had more fatal crashes but consisted of less deaths.

still, 130 or so crashes a year is very small compared to the amount of flights there is throughout the year. it's a very small percentage. can't remember where i got 17 from, I'll have to go have a look.

eta: He added the number of fatal plane accidents this year – including today’s Algerian jet – is 12 – five below the ten-year average to July 24.The 12 incidents in the past seven months include the TransAsia aircraft that crashed while trying to land on an island off Taiwan, killing all 47 people on board.
The figure is down from the 10-year average of 17 fatal crashes.

obv that's wrong as 2012 is the lowest fatal crashes but point is 30 fatal and 100 more non-fatal a year vs the tens of thousands of flights a day is nothing despite how tragic it is. still, as it is constantly said, safer than other transport.

What you need to think about is the amount of people who travel on airplanes each day and how many of them land safely. Here's something from the Boeing site:

Every day approximately six million people board airplanes and arrive safely at their destinations. Flying is one of the safest modes of transportation today. The overall safety record of commercial airplanes is excellent and has been steadily improving over time.

i think everyone understands that, i think it's more to do with the intensity of death on an aircraft rather than in a car

it's completely out of your control, and relatively unknown which can be frightening
also after reading the description of what happened when the missile hit that plane i'll tell you i'd rather be in a carcrash 100 times than have to go through that once

Surely it's out of your control if you are just a passenger in the car?

even as a passenger i'd feel like i'd have more control rather than sitting in an aircraft

anyway that's not even my main 'worry' mine is more to do with the intensity and brutalness of your death by plane

not saying it's put me off going on planes, obviously it hasn't but i understand why some people can fear it
