Wrapped up against the chilly evening in a winter overcoat, he joined the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince Harry at the pageant in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. They watched 300 performers and 100 musicians re-enact battles and illustrate the extraordinary contribution made by the fearsome Nepali fighters to British history.

The show, watched by a crowd of 1,650, was narrated by actress Joanna Lumley, whose father was a Gurkha officer, and television historian Dan Snow. In a message for the commemorative programme, Prince Charles, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Gurkha Rifles and patron of the Gurkha Welfare Trust, paid tribute to the Gurkhas' contribution to British history. "We come together to recognise and celebrate these remarkable men and their extraordinary service to our country," he said. "In the 200 years that the Gurkhas have fought for the British Crown they have earned our nation's deepest respect and gratitude."

Meanwhile Prince Philip is expected to spend his birthday privately in London. Gun salutes will be fired to mark the occasion including, at the Tower of London at 1pm, a 62-gun salute across the Thames.

He is the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. The record for the longest-lived male descendant of Queen Victoria is currently held by Count Carl Johan Bernadotte of Wisborg (the Duke of Connaught's grandson) who lived to be 95 years, 6 months and 5 days old. Prince Philip would surpass this record on 15 December 2016.

Happy birthday to Prince Philip.

Amazing health for a 94 year old. But then so was Count Carl Johan who died a few years ago.
