Joan Rivers family settles medical malpractice case

- Case settled between family and medical practice in deal believed to be worth eight figure sum
- Rivers died during a routine exploratory surgery in September of 2014 in medically bizzare circumstances

The family of Joan Rivers has settled its legal case against a medical clinic in New York which it blamed for her death in 2014. The sum settled for is believed to be an eight-figure sum. Rivers died days after she suffered a cardiac arrest while undergoing a procedure to examine her throat.

Her family had claimed the Yorkville Endoscopy centre performed unauthorised procedures on the comedian.

It also alleged the clinic failed to take appropriate action when her vital signs weakened. The family said it was pleased with the settlement but did not reveal the amount of compensation. Joan Rivers's daughter, Melissa, filed a malpractice suit in January 2015, alleging doctors posed for selfies with her mother while she was unconscious.

In a statement, she said the settlement allowed her to "put the legal aspects of my mother's death behind me and ensure that those culpable for her death have accepted responsibility for their actions quickly and without equivocation".

The Rivers' lawyers said the doctors had not denied responsibility.

Shortly before the lawsuit was filed, a government health agency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, cited the Yorkville clinic for failing to follow standard protocols during its treatment of Rivers. After the settlement was announced, the Yorkville clinic said: "Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the Rivers family.

"We remain committed to providing quality, compassionate healthcare services that meet the needs of our patients, their families and the community."

Finally settled and given they have settled they've basically de facto accepted responsibility.

When you go for an operation you put your life in the hands of those who are medically qualified. Yet all too many times there's so many stories of things happening to people that shouldn't be happening - Joan was left on the medical table for nearly half an hour with her vital signs collapsing. And she was a wealthy woman and celebrity: which goes to show it can happen to anyone. The selfie aspect to the story just makes it a thousand times worse.

Pretty sure Melissa would rather have her mother back for all the money in the world. She should have gone on well into her 90s.

Yes because Melissa Rivers who inherited $100m+ and who has a successful career of her own really needed extra cash. It's actually quite sick that someone would jump to such a conclusion given how close knit the family were: Joan actually lived with her daughter and grandson for much of the week.

If my relative, a relative of @scottish; or your relative were given procedures that were not authorised, was ignored when vital signs were failing on the operating table and selfies were taken whilst her mother was literally dying on the table - wouldn't you take the cowboy doctors and medical staff who did such a thing to court? Joan Rivers was 81 yes, but she should still be here today given her stamina and excellent health.

The money hungry Melissa Rivers is currently auctioning off Joan's belongings for her mothers favoured charities.

A portion of the money will go to charity. Hardly selling them off FOR the charity then; that's like me selling you a burger and keeping some of the profits, and you then selling everyone I sold you the burger for charity..

Personally, I find it quite sick that somebody wants to let hundreds of thousands of lives be affected by removing foreign aid, but it's cool, you keep standing up for one celebrity, whilst branding people like me as sick.

It doesn't take someone with a PhD to work out that I was referring to you branding myself and other's "sick", and not specifically to Melissa Rivers giving a portion of money to charity.
