    German Federal Election, 2025

The ruling SPD (Labour) Party is expected to lose power as the AfD (Reform) surge ahead of the CDU (Tories)

German politics is quite confusing but I have included in (brackets) the British equivalents to help understand what is happening. Basically in British terms - the Tories were in power for most of the 2010s under Chancellor Merkel, then the Labour Party under Chancellor Scholz won and has led Germany since 2021 under a Labour-Green coalition.

In recent years however, there has been a rise in a party called the AfD - which stands for the Alternative for Germany. It's a socially conservative, German patriotic party that supports borders controls and protecting sovereignty, German identity and German culture against the huge waves of immigration that Germany has faced in recent years, especially under Chancellor Merkel.

    Anyway, here's the latest opinion polling. Red = SPD/Black = CDU/Cyan = AfD/Green = Green

Germans go to the polls on the 23rd February 2025.

    Fantastic result for the AFD.

The CDU and SPD will now likely join together in coalition to block the AFD from government... this time.

The last time the SPD didn't come 1st or 2nd in a German election was in 1887(!)
