Labour MP for Makerfield Josh Simons resigned the seat to allow Andy Burnham to run for Parliament - if he wins he is expected to mount a leadership challenge to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer

A highly consequential by-election that will decide the next Prime Minister. Sir Keir Starmer's authority has all but drained away and he is rumoured to be setting a timetable for his departure fairly soon. If Burnham becomes an MP, he's a cert to be PM.

This is a formerly strong Labour constituency, now heading strongly Reform.

If Reform win, they blow up Burnham's chance of becoming PM. If Burnham wins, he gives Labour hope of stopping Farage reaching Number 10.
