I personally think Kurt Cobain was and still is OH so overrated - but that's my opinion.
    My top LYRICISTS would be:
Jeff Buckley - wow, his music is so...wow...
John Lennon - I think more so than Paul McCartney, but again, my opinion
    Bob Dylan - again, incredible
Kris Roe (frontman for The Ataris) - This is for personal reasons, a lot of his songs (I know this sound cheesy) sometimes just make me cry (how sad is that)

I think Nirvana were over-rated and his guitar playing is as well. But not his lyrical/songwriting ability. As a lyricist he's up there with 90's stars such as Vedder and Maynard James Keenan (Tool). He's my idol so I'm probably slightly biased. He was able to do so much with his songs and there was always an underlying meaning involved. On a personal level, he was great to listen to, especially when depressed. It's like he understands how you feel, because his songs contain so much emotion and subtle or explosive bursts of anger.

On a lyrical basis, I think In Utero was one of the greatest albums of our generation. There's so much meaning involved with every song, only a genius could write so imaginably. As a guitar player, he is often very over-rated. I remember Rolling Stone magazine put him at #10 on the all-time greatest guitarists' list. After reading that article, I lost all respect I ever had for that magazine. Sure, Cobain was a very good guitar player, but nothing special. He didn't revolutionise playing or anything else similar, he could just create average riffs. I think his death, as usual with rockstars, has improved his popularity as millions portray him as a god-like figure.

Actually I would agree with you there, on both points.

Yeh, I agree that nirvana and his guitar playing were over rated, but there are reasons why. Obviously SLTS was the kickstart for alternative. There werent many [good] alternative bands before, and around the time of nirvana's popularity boom. Everyone loved the sound, but there were very few bands that made it. Kinda my theory... I agree though, over rated as a whole, still love em though.

Ok, might sound stupid, but Gavin Rossdale of Bush/institute. He probably has the wierdest lyrics that at some times dont even make sense, but it gets you thinking about what he means, or what he is actually saying. Kind of like paintings, no one wants to look at something they have seen before, but wierd ones always gets your attention.

Omar Rodriquez Lopex/Cedric Bixler out of At The Drive In/ Mars Volta. Seriously amazing, i put both because they alternate songwriting duties and i love all their songs so yeah.

    AND

Daryll Palumbo from Head Automatica/Glassjaw. This guy is amazing suffers from Crohn's disease and his lyrics are just full of so much emotion. It kinda makes me feel like i should stop complaining and imagine being in his shoes.

Bert McCracken of The Used writes such great lyrics.
Most of them are based on the times he spent in Utah while he used to do drugs etc. They are really emotional and yah ;] I love the guy.
