If I were to do all that, I'd get slapped from all of my family, including cousins etc...

As long as the parents don't go overboard with the hitting then a quick smack on the bottom usually works. Just don't take it to the level my step-dad did when I was growing up... although I have to give him some thanks for that as I can now take a good beating and still get up

ROFL Kaut! My parents used to hit me when I was like 4 but they don't anymore. Except the time last year when my mum like hit me around like really bad when my science teacher told her at parents evening that I was worst in the class.

Well duh! That's what you get for being the worst in your science class... pshhh... kids these days

Nah, my dad had the habit of throwing me down the stairs/pulling me back up by my hair (which I grew out to make it easier for him) and into walls and kicking me in public because he thought I was lazy and never did anything. After I got kicked out by my mom cause she was afraid my step-dad would kill me, he realized that he never noticed all of the stuff that I did do... cause then he had to do it, lol. We get along now, he's changed, and in a weird way I can thank him for all of those near death beatings because it made me a stronger more independent person.

There's been a few threads on this and I still believe that spanking is more effective and less damaging to the child. Scolding or talking abusive to the child will add up overtime and after awhile the kid will have serious self-esteem issues as that's what killed my self worth more than getting hit.

If you spank a kid, tell them that they did wrong, the pain will go away but they'll know not to do it again. If you tell a kid they're worthless and stupid because they forgot to do their homework then that will stay with them for a long time.

What are the other alternatives of discipline?

Time out in their room? The one place they'd rather be since most kids today have a thousand video games and a comptuer in their room? Yah, that'll do the job.

Standing in the corner for a period of time? Yah, I never liked that one, but it didn't do the job as I knew if I got in trouble and sent to the corner... no big deal. Just thirty minutes to think about what I'd do next.

Privelages taken away? Oh no, I can't go to John's tonight. Can't watch TV... meh, I was going to go to bed anyway.

Getting your bottom paddled? Now that hurts. Please Mommy! Please don't! I'll be good! I'll be good! Not with the fly swatter Mommy! I'm sorry! I'll be good! I promise!

Yah... first hand experience, the last one is more effective as long as you're not pulling out the bull whips. Of course then they'll remember what they did wrong every time they sit down.

When i was younger my ma used to make me kneel on a coathanger and i had to like keep my legs straight... i couldnt sit on my bum... it ached loaddds, id have to do it till i apoligised or something, but i was a stubborn little bish and just used to kneel there sticking my tounge out at her. Id end up with fat bruises on my knees lol.
My brother used to smack me lol, it was weird, we always used to play fight and he would be quite rough but i just used to laugh but the minute i knew i did something wrong i would cry my eyes out at the slightest tap...

Lol i can be stubborn most of the time because my family make me so angrey. I really am not a fan of my Dad ...He isnt what i like in a father... There are only some occasions when he's nice to me and thats mostly when me mum is around. And when i'm with my mum i'd tell her what he'd done to me that day and he'd deny it and tell me i'm a lying .. Well theres a series of things he'd call me. We are really trying to get on Better but it just doesnt work. My friend used to get abused by her parents. Her parents even Burned her on her leg once and i've seen the Burn from when we get changed in P.E. She has been abused all her life really and she said her step Dad was a rapist. And other people in our class have said that too. Luckily she is now in a foster home and should be there for a few more months untill the court or what ever decides what to do with her. She's told us how happy she is to have a new family and be able to go home and not worry about a thing! Although her school attitude hasnt Changed. She always used to be a attention seeker... and still is... But i still like her

Funny, i was going to make a thread on this a while ago.
But yeah, this morning my friend came to school crying and she doesnt usually cry... shes 16 by the way.
And she told us all that she had just like got thrown out her house by her, not even step dad yet. He kept slapping her round the face and kicking her, when i went to her house he threw her into the table and she cut a bit a of her face - i was just scared to be there so i headed back home. And he kept telling them that shes useless all the time. Her mum is scared of leaving him because he's hit her before and she has a child with him. Once my friend even said that she'd had enough of her little sister - as a joke. Because shes only 2. And Tim - her not even dad. - started kicking her and yelling at her that she shouldnt say stuff like that - even if its a joke.
I hate people like that, good that i have normal parents!
    Emmy..
