I think bret wanted to leave the WWE and go to WCW after his last match, so he Vince played him at his own game but Bret lost.

Bret was WWF Champion and told Vince he was going to WCW because they offered him more money. There are four Bret Hart wrongs there, 1. WWF Champion, 2. Top WWF star, 3. Already being paid very well in WWF, 4. Fan support. Hart was willing to spit in the face of all the WWF fans and sell out to WCW. He deserved all he got that night.
