All depends on what aircraft, flaps are not as important in lets say a PA28 than they are in a 737-800.
Practice makes perfect, if you really have to do some of the flying lessons built in on flight sim 2004.
Oh and im crap at decent, my nose is pointing too low i think, whereas it should just be about 5 degrees down, whereas because im crap at it, i end up going 20 degrees otherwise i overshoot the runway.

Start your decent a little earlier then, reduce your speed, apply a little flap possibily, and just keep on a reasonable hight with the runway.
