ATC, What should I say (I have read other guides on forum) - Guidance
k um, cus im bored
sometimes you may want to do a radio check to see how the controller is reading you
"BAW123, radio check"
the controller will probably say
"BAW123 *controller position*, hello, readability *1 - 5, 1 being very unclear and 5 being crystal clear
Then when you're ready you need to request clearance. This may vary to controllers needs but generally you would say (using an example)
"BAW123, stand xx, type x, with information x, requesting IFR clearance to x"
Then the controller will read back
"BAW123, (will depend on which ATC is online, they will introduce themseleves if you havent done a radio check) xxxx approach/tower/ground hello, you're cleared to madrid via the CPT3R departure squawk 1234 - (note that sometimes after the CPT3R they may say runway and initial altitude, although they shouldnt have to because the intial altitude and runway are all part of the SID)
once you read that back correct and set up your FMC and plane you need to request push and start clearance
"BAW123 requesting push and start" - NOTE that if you havent already given your stand number you should say "BAW123, stand 13, requesting push and start"
the controller then will say "BAW123 push and start is approved, QNH xxxx" - they may say face *north, e
ast, south or west* on taxiway *appropriate taxiway" you then read that back
you will then need to request taxi "BAW123 requesting taxi". the controller then may say something like "BAW123, taxi via link B and H to hold R1, runway 23" you then read that back
once you're at the holding point, if they havent said anything to you when you've been waiting there, just call up with "BAW123 at the hold, ready for departure". the controller will then say "BAW123, winds xxx at xx knots, runway xx, cleared for takeoff". if there is traffic to close to landing that it is not safe for you to takeoff, the controller then may say "BAW123, after the landing Boeing 737, via R1, line up and wait runway xx". You then readback that and line up and wait, until you're given takeoff clearance. With takeoff clearance, you don't need to readback the winds.
once you're airborne, the controller will hand you off to the next appropriate station - eg, "BAW123, contact essex radar, frequency 120.620 bye!". If there is no atc online, you will go to UNICOM (122.800)
hope that helped, if not, feel free to add me - [email protected]
