It is often positively correlated with the standard of living in a given country. Seeing as though Spain's GDP per Capita is almost 3x as much as Russia's, your argument that Spain is a 'poor country' is flawed. If anything Russia, as you would it put it, is a 'poor country'.

Just because Spain is in debt doesn't make it a dirty, rough or bad place to live.
