I love my Karl so much that I would rather die than lose him. I've been with him for so long now that life without him would be worthless. There is nobody else I know that's like him, so finding love after Karl would be virtually impossible.

No, I wouldn't rather die. The main reason is that at the end of the day, we all die. If you broke up with your boyfriend/girlfriend, there is plenty more fish in the sea, even if you are devoted to them. No matter what, at one time in your life, you have been single/widowed, and one time in the future, you will be single/widowed.

Then again, it really does depend on the situation. In some situations, I would.
